Beschreibung

The Pelican Table is a small table designed by Finn Juhl in 1940. The round table is available in different finishes: oak, walnut, Oregon pine or in black lacquered oak. The side table is a beautiful example of Finn Juhl's intellectual affinity with modern art.

The Pelikan table was first shown at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers' Guild exhibition in 1940. The table pictured is, as far as we know, the only one that was made. There are also no drawings of the Pelikan table, only a photo from the exhibition itself, in which it was shown together with two Pelikan chairs. 75 years later, the table suddenly turns up at an auction in Paris. Thanks to the rediscovery of the table, the exact measurements could be determined. The house of Finn Juhl can now finally reissue the table as it was once designed at the Copenhagen exhibition

We only show a selection of variants on our website, you can find other designs in the product sheet. If you would like a different design or need help with your order, please feel free to contact us.

Designers

When designing a piece of furniture, Finn Juhl did not think about a practical construction, but rather the way of thinking of a sculptor. This way of working was not yet known in the 1940s and 1950s. His goal was to design furniture with movement and life. Finn Juhl was proud that both the supporting elements of the furniture and the person sitting seemed to float.

Finn Juhl originally wanted to become an art historian. Since his early years he was interested in visual arts. However, his father did not allow him to pursue an artistic career. Instead, Finn Juhl enrolled in the Department of Architecture at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Finn Juhl began his studies in the 1930s, an important period in furniture design when modern design emerged. While still a student, Finn Juhl began working with the well-known Danish architect Vilhelm Lauritzen in 1934. In his studio he worked on large projects such as the Danish Broadcasting House and Copenhagen Airport. Finn Juhl was so busy that he never finished his studies. Nevertheless, in 1942 he was honored to become a member of the Academic Architect Society and later became a visiting professor at the Institute of Design in Chicago. At the time he was making a name for himself as a furniture designer, he always described himself as self-taught.
