A special dedication and enthusiasm for traditional craftsmanship as well as high-quality manufactured, durable and timeless utilitarian objects have been an important part of Japanese culture for centuries. Good design can be found in offices, shops, restaurants and cafés, but especially in the home. From teacups to hairdryers - everywhere you look you are surrounded by beautifully shaped everyday products that are simple but sophisticated, functional and visually appealing at the same time.
This book shows the entire range of Japanese design from 1945 to the present day: eighty designers and hundreds of objects from the most diverse areas of life are presented in detail and accompanied by overarching essays. The range extends from furniture, lighting, tableware and textiles to electrical appliances and packaging - including popular icons of Japanese design such as Sori Yanagi's 'Butterfly Stool', Isamu Noguchi's 'Akari Light Sculptures', Kenji Ekuan's 'Kikkoman' soy sauce bottle and the 'Walkman®' by Sony.
