Tokumatsu Ishikawa, the founder of Zebra, chose the zebra as the symbol of his company in 1914 to express his desire that all members of the company should have a similar sense of togetherness and solidarity in marking pens that are essential for the development and improvement of culture.

The Japanese word "zebra" can also be written with Chinese characters composed of elements symbolising "writing" and "royalty", which Ishikawa felt was very appropriate for a company dedicated to the pen industry.

The zebra is backward in their trademark. This is to indicate that knowledge accumulated in the past is being used to make progress in new areas.
